A. Students who do not return to a designated affected postsecondary institutions are not required to repay any federal student loans they received from that institution for a period of study that was interrupted due to Hurricane Katrina. If the student decides to attend another postsecondary institution, a new federal financial aid package may be awarded for attendance at the new institution. (3/1)
SLB-B.
I was awarded a federal student loan to attend a postsecondary institution impacted
by Hurricane Katrina. I did not attend another institution
during the interrupted term and am returning to my original school. What
are my obligations regarding the repayment of the loan I received for the period
of study that was interrupted as a result of the hurricane?
A.Students who did not attend
another institution for the Fall term and are returning to their original designated affected postsecondary institutions are not required to repay any federal student
loans they received from that institution for a period of study that was interrupted
due to Hurricane Katrina. If the student decides to return to the original institution,
a new federal financial aid package may be awarded for attendance at that institution.

The federal student loan
that the student received to attend the new institution will remain in place
and the student will be responsible for repaying any student loans awarded for

SLB-D. I was awarded a federal student loan to attend a postsecondary institution impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Because of the hurricane, I attended another school for the Fall where I did not receive federal financial aid. I intend to return to my original school. What are my obligations regarding the repayment of the federal student loan I received at the original school for the period of study that was interrupted as a result of the hurricane?
A. If a student decides to return to their original designated affected postsecondary institutions after attending another institution where no financial aid was awarded, they should contact their original institution to determine the status of the Fall financial aid award. (3/1)
SLB-E. I have outstanding federal student loans and was in repayment status prior to the hurricanes. These loans were placed into an automatic loan-payment forbearance due to Hurricane Katrina? When will I have to begin making monthly payments on that loan?
A. Federal student loan borrowers participating in the Federal Family Education Loan, Direct Loan and Perkins Loan Programs who lived in an area that was designated by FEMA for disaster assistance for individuals due to Hurricane Katrina automatically received a loan-payment forbearance from August 29, 2005 through February 28, 2006. Borrowers must resume making payments beginning with their March billing cycle. Your lender will contact you with specific instructions on how and when to begin making payments. Borrowers unable to make payments should contact their lender for assistance. (3/1)
