Hurricane Information - Hurricane Rita Information - Federal Student Loan Borrowers

SLB 1. What assistance is available to individuals impacted by Hurricane Rita?

SLB 4. I have federal student loans and am currently in my grace period but that is due to expire on December 1. I was impacted by Hurricane Rita and will not be able to begin making payments. Is there any relief available?

 

SLB 1. What assistance is available to individuals impacted by Hurricane Rita?

A. FEMA declared certain counties in Texas and certain parishes in Louisiana disaster areas eligible for "Individual Assistance" as a result of Hurricane Rita. These declarations are in addition to the parishes and counties that FEMA had previously declared disaster areas as a result of Hurricane Katrina. The provisions of Dear Colleague Letter GEN-04-04 (http://www.ifap.ed.gov/dpcletters/GEN0404.html) can and should, be relied upon by individuals, institutions, loan holders, and guaranty agencies located in the Hurricane Rita declared disaster areas. SLB 2. I am having trouble making my monthly payment as a result of Hurricane Rita?

A. Federal student loan borrowers participating in the Federal Family Education Loan, Direct Loan and Perkins Loan Programs who live in an area that has been designated by FEMA for disaster assistance for individuals due to Hurricane Rita will automatically receive a loan-payment forbearance from August 29, 2005 through February 28, 2006. During this period, impacted borrowers are not required to make monthly payments on eligible loans. This is an extension of the 90-day forbearance granted under previous guidance issued by the Department for federal student loan borrowers impacted by a disaster. No action is required by the borrower to receive the loan-payment forbearance. (11/1)

SLB 3. To whom do I make my Perkins loan payment?

A. Federal student loan borrowers participating in the Perkins Loan Program who live in an area that has been designated by FEMA for disaster assistance for individuals due to Hurricane Rita will automatically receive a loan-payment forbearance from August 29, 2005 through February 28, 2006. During this period, impacted borrowers are not required to make monthly payments on eligible loans. This is an extension of the 90-day forbearance granted under previous guidance issued by the Department for federal student loan borrowers impacted by a disaster. No action is required by the borrower to receive the loan-payment forbearance. If you wish to make a loan payment, contact your school or its billing/servicing agent and ask them how to proceed. If your school is not currently operating, you do not need to continue payments until the school re-opens. (11/1)

SLB 4. I have federal student loans and am currently in my grace period but that is due to expire on December 1. I was impacted by Hurricane Rita and will not be able to begin making payments. Is there any relief available?

A. All federal student loan borrowers who live in an area that has been designated by FEMA for disaster assistance for individuals due to Hurricane Rita will automatically receive a loan-payment forbearance through February 28, 2006. Once your grace period expires, you will automatically receive a loan-payment forbearance through February 28, 2006 during which time no payments are required. No action is required by the borrower to receive the loan-payment forbearance. (11/1)
