SLB 1. I have an outstanding student loan and, due to Hurricane Katrina, I am unable to make my monthly payment. Is there any relief available?
A. All student loan borrowers who live in an area that has been designated by FEMA for disaster assistance for individuals and households due to Hurricane Katrina will automatically receive a loan-payment forbearance for at least 90 days during which payments are not required. No action is required by the borrower to receive the loan-payment forbearance. The Department will be providing additional guidance in the coming days and posting it to this site. (9/8 updated 9/15)
SLB 2. I understand
Im not required to make loan payments while Im in school. If I am
forced to leave my school because it is non-operational due to Hurricane Katrina,
will I need to begin making payments on my loans?
A. Any student attending a school impacted by Hurricane Katrina, and located
in an area designated by FEMA for disaster assistance for individuals and households,
who had loans that were in an "in-school" status at the time of the
disaster will remain in an "in-school" status during the period of
disaster-related nonattendance. (9/9 updated 9/15)
SLB 3. To whom do I make my Perkins loan payment?
A. All student loan borrowers
who live in an area that has been designated by FEMA for disaster assistance
for individuals and households due to Hurricane Katrina will automatically receive
a loan-payment forbearance on all federal student loans, including Perkins loans,
for at least 90 days during which payments are not required. No action is required
by the borrower to receive the loan-payment forbearance. To make a loan payment,
contact your school or its billing/servicing agent and ask them how to proceed.
If your school is not currently operating, you do not need to continue payments
