Revised on 09-12-2005

The Cohort Default Rate Guide (Guide) is a comprehensive publication that presents information on cohort default rates for schools participating in the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program and the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program. Default Prevention and Management previously provided the Guide twice a year with the draft and the official cohort default rates. This new Guide, published August 2001, is considered the permanent version and any change to its content will be described only on the “change page information” area of this web site. The Guide incorporates the new cohort default rate regulations published July 1, 2001.

Default Prevention and Management provided a hardcopy of this Guide to each school as an enclosure to the FY 1999 cohort default rate notification package that was mailed on September 17, 2001. Schools, Data Managers and other users should routinely check the “change page information” area of this web site for official content changes.

This guide is available in two formats:

The Cohort Default Rate Guide Quick Reference presents some of the key elements of the Guide in a more informal manner to give schools a summary of what they should do during the draft and official cohort default rate cycles.
