RE: Tip of the Week --- Using Quick Correction
to Resolve SAR/ISIR Signature Rejects

This week's tip highlights a specific feature or process in the EDExpress software: Using Quick Correction to resolve SAR/ISIR signature rejects.

When a dependent student files a paper FAFSA without including the required parental signature(s), the resulting SAR/ISIR is processed with a SAR/ISIR reject code 15. Similarly, dependent students who submit a FAFSA electronically (via FAFSA on the Web, Renewal FAFSA on the Web or FAFSA Express) and do not mail the required signature page to the CPS will receive a SAR/ISIR with a SAR/ISIR reject code 16. In both cases, the SAR/ISIR will be processed without an EFC and considered rejected by the CPS and the EDExpress software.

To resolve a SAR/ISIR transaction with a reject code of 15 or 16, the missing signature status must be corrected. Students can do this by gathering the required signatures on their paper SAR and mailing it to the CPS. EDExpress users can make this ISIR correction for their students and resolve the signature reject more quickly, however, by using the software's Quick Correction feature.

Quick Correction can be accessed from the main screen of the software via the Process menu. Enter the student's SSN, name ID (first two letters of the student's last name), and the transaction number you wish to correct, then click on the Continue button. Scroll down to field 104 and set the value to "A" to indicate the student has signed the application (if independent) or to "B" to indicate the application has been signed by both the student and parent (if dependent). If your school code is not on the transaction, it must be added. Click on the Save button to save the correction. The correction record can now be exported and transmitted to the CPS.

Please remember by performing a signature correction electronically, you are verifying you have collected the necessary missing signatures and can produce them if asked to do so by ED.
