College Scorecard Metrics by Field of Study

College Scorecard has published new data metrics including 1) earnings of students one-year after graduation by field of study and 2) cumulative loan debt of borrowers by field of study. These new data metrics begin to address the March 2019 Executive Order on Improving Free Inquiry, Transparency, and Accountability at Colleges and Universities.

In 2020, College Scorecard will continue to expand and address the remaining data metrics described in the Executive Order. In addition, College Scorecard will continue to update earnings information to include post-completion earnings measured further out from graduation as more data become available over time.

Correcting Historical Program-Level Enrollment Data in NSLDS®

Since College Scorecard derives these data metrics from historical program-level enrollment data reported to the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS), institutions are encouraged to confirm the accuracy of historical records in NSLDS to ensure future College Scorecard calculations are accurate. To the extent that institutions would like to correct historical program-level enrollment data, we encourage institutions to use the following resources:

  • Earlier this year, we enabled new functionality in NSLDS to update previously reported data. Information about using the functionality was provided in the “How to Correct Historical Enrollment Reporting in NSLDS” webinar, offered on June 11, 2019. Refer to Dear Colleague Letter ANN-19-03 to access the webinar recording, presentation slides, and transcript.

  • Additional guidance on the new functionality was provided in NSLDS Newsletter 64.

  • An update to the NSLDS Enrollment Reporting Guide, available later this month in the NSLDS Reference Materials section of the Information for Financial Aid Professionals (IFAP) website, will provide information on program-level enrollment reporting and guidance on how to use NSLDS for updating previously reported data.

  • College Scorecard uses both NSLDS and Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) data to present program-level information to prospective students and data users. We encourage institutions to ensure that data are reported consistently across NSLDS and IPEDS. For more information on how College Scorecard uses NSLDS and IPEDS data, refer to the technical documentation available at https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/assets/FieldOfStudyDataDocumentation.pdf.
